The franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a forgettable season in the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), hosted in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This was the first time in their 10-year history in the league that the Super Kings, under the leadership of former Indian captain, MS Dhoni failed to qualify for the second stage of the tournament.

The team finished at the second last position in the points tally of IPL 2020 with 12 points under their belt in 14 games. The torrid run in the tournament raised serious questions on Dhoni’s formula of ‘Experience over Youth’. Chennai contingent comprises several senior players most of whom are done with their stint in the international circuit. While having an experienced squad worked for CSK in 2018 and 2019 as they emerged as winners and runners-up respectively, the same backfired in 2020.

Thus, the CSK  management is keen on building a new squad for the coming years. It is believed that they are keeping a close eye on players who can be roped in for the next year. This means that CSK will be releasing a lot of players from their squad ahead of IPL 2021 auctions.

Rajasthan Royals take a sly dig at CSK

The fans are also eager to witness CSK in new colours and are contemplating the name of the players the franchise can pick for the next edition. Some of the Yellow Army fans also wish to see former Australian captain Steve Smith in the Yellow jersey in the Indian league as they suggested Rajasthan Royals (RR) to trade Smith to CSK.

On January 5, 2020, the official Twitter handle of Rajasthan hosted an interactive session with their fans and followers as they answered a variety of questions related to their players and other teams. “BREAKING: We’re a bit bored. Anyone there?” RR tweeted.

One of the Super Kings fan took this chance to request RR to trade Steve Smith to CSK ahead of IPL 2021. However, the twitter handle of RR, that is known for their wit and humour, took a jibe at the Super Kings for their policy of roping in aged players while denying the possibility of Smith leaving the Royals franchise.

“Let’s finish the boredom by trading Smudge to CSK,” the fan wrote.

RR gave a hilarious response to the fan as it wrote: “Let’s wait on this, he’s still in his early 30s.”
