Ruturaj Gaikwad has the capability to become the CSK captain: Virender Sehwag

Ruturaj Gaikwad is in sublime form with the willow in the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). His scores in his last 3 innings read 64, 33, and 75. And, it was Gaikwad’s scintillating assault with the willow at the top of the order on 28th April 2021 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) that allowed the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) side to post their 5th victory on the trot.

And, former Indian batting great Virender Sehwag has a massive statement to make regarding Gaikwad. Sehwag opined that even though he has not met Gaikwad personally, the CSK player can even go on to lead the CSK side in the next couple of years.

Sehwag further added that Gaikwad bats with a calm temperament and knows when he needs to take risks. And, Sehwag cited these qualities as the reason why Gaikwad might go on to lead the CSK side in the future. The ‘Nawab of Najafgarh’ concluded by stating that if Gaikwad gets a chance to lead in some domestic tournaments, he can surely go on to become the captain of the CSK side.

“I haven’t met him, nor seen Ruturaj Gaikwad play personally, but if he stays at CSK for the next couple of years, he may have the capability to become the captain. I haven’t spent time with him personally. But he bats with a calm head, he knows when to take risks and how to bat at each moment.

He doesn’t run away from responsibility, nor does he throw away his wicket. Looking at all these qualities, I feel if he stays at CSK and continues there, he may have the capability. Does he captain in domestic cricket? If yes, then his chances of leading CSK will surely increase,” said Sehwag in a chat with Cricbuzz.

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) side has been in scintillating form in the 14th edition of the IPL. The three-time IPL champions have looked unstoppable, have won 5 out of the 6 matches that they have played this year, and are currently occupying the top place in the points table.

And, Gaikwad has played a crucial role in Chennai’s victorious run. He is the 2nd highest run-scorer for the CSK side this season and has amassed 192 runs at an average of 32.00 and a strike rate of 129.73.

Ruturaj Gaikwad and the Chennai Super Kings will next be seen in action on 1st May 2021 against the Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (IPL).
