It was on June 16 that the Pakistan team met India in the epic World Cup clash. It wasn’t a battle of equals and thus things didn’t pan out their way and since then Sarfaraz Ahmed & Co. especially the skipper has faced a lot of criticism. It is not just for their performance on the field but even their fitness levels, dietary habits, going out late at night, anything and everything has been used to hit back at them.
Sarfaraz even had to face personal embarrassment when he was at a mall with his son and an individual walked up to him, recording a video on his phone. The fan went to the extent of calling him ‘as fat as a pig’ all Sarfaraz could do there was walk off and ignore it. Following the incident, he did get a lot of support from the community but that did cause a lot of damage.
Wife was crying in the hotel
When the 32-year-old returned back to the hotel, his wife was sitting there sobbing having watched the video herself. He had to console her and also explain how fans get so passionate about their cricket that at times it gets a bit too much.
“When I went back to the hotel I saw my wife was crying after watching the video. I tried to explain to her that this is just one video and that we have had people walk up to us and tell things. This is nothing serious we must be strong. All of this is a part of life, when we don’t perform well we will have to go through all this,” the Pakistan skipper said in a conversation with the ICC insider.
Sarfaraz grateful for the support
He didn’t just get support from people close to him but also from fans and supporters on social media and other channels. That particular fan’s actions were considered shameful and he also apologized for it.
“Not just family members whoever saw the video have reacted against it. I would like to thank everyone who sent me tweets and messages of support and love on social media. We are grateful to everyone. Whatever we are today is because of our fans. If our fans support us, even we will perform better and stay motivated.
I have always said that our Pakistani fans love us a lot. And we also know that when we win they will give us a lot of respect and when we lose, their anger is valid because they have expectations from us,” Sarfaraz further added.

It wasn’t just the fact that the team lost the match, but that they lost in such a fashion to arch-rivals India was a prime reason for such outrage. However, the skipper is grateful to all of them who once again were out there in the stands at the Lord’s to cheer for the team in their next outing.
“After losing the match against India, that one week that passed by, however, it was, our fans still came to Lord’s and supported the Pakistan team. They came to the hotel where we were staying and even met us outside and all of them told us one thing that we should concentrate on giving our best and leave the rest up to God,” Sarfaraz stated.
