Long-serving Pakistan cricket captain Sarfaraz Ahmed, who recently not only got sacked from the top position but also lost his place in the team’s Test and T20I squads headed to Australia, reclaimed some luck in the domestic circuit. The 32-year-old has agreed to resume captaincy of his provincial side Sindh in the ongoing Quad-e-Azam Trophy.
The former Pakistan captain took over from Asad Shafiq who led the side in the National T20 Cup where Sarfaraz scored a few brisk knocks. On Monday, Sarfaraz captained his province in the fifth-round fixture of the tournament while Shafiq found himself relegated to the stand-in duty.
Shafiq chipped in as the captain in the T20 tournament after Sarfaraz stood down following a spat with a reporter in a press conference. He will, however, be leaving for Australia as part of Pakistan’s Test squad.
Sarfaraz Ahmed had a good day behind the stumps
Speaking about the game that Sarfaraz Ahmed is captaining, Central Punjab scored 263 for 7 at stumps on Day 1 of the game in Faisalabad with the wicket-keeper-captain taking three catches. He was abruptly removed from both the captaincy and teams in Tests and T20Is after Pakistan lost their recent series against a depleted Sri Lankan side at home 0-3.
The move came under heavy criticism with fingers being raised at current head coach-cum-chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq but the latter rubbished the conspiracy theories saying it all depended on players’ forms. While Babar Azam replaced Sarfaraz as the captain in the T20Is, Azhar Ali was chosen as the new captain in Tests.
Sarfaraz Ahmed is one of Pakistan’s most successful captains who led the team to the No.1 position in the shortest format. He also won them the Champions Trophy in 2017 beating India in the final in England. However, Sarfaraz has failed to deliver in recent times, losing a number of series on the trot.
Pakistan won ODI series when they beat Sri Lanka 2-0 at home but the loss in the T20I series hurt Sarfaraz. His dismal record as the captain in the ICC World Cup this year also served as a reason for his downfall.
