Team India has reached South Africa for three Tests and as many ODIs and their preparations look on song. The action will kick-start on December 26 with the Boxing Day Test match at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. It has to be noted that South Africa is one of the very few places where India is yet to win a Test series.

Meanwhile, the upcoming series holds great significance for Kohli amid the captaincy controversy in Indian cricket. While naming the Test squad for the three-match series, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) dropped a bombshell by sacking Virat Kohli as ODI captain, giving the charge to Rohit Sharma, who also took over as T20I captain post the T20 World Cup last month.
More interestingly, Kohli and BCCI president Sourav Gangult then came up with different statements in public. The latter claimed that he asked Kohli to not quit T20I captaincy. “I personally requested him (Kohli) not to give up the T20I captaincy. Obviously, he felt the workload. Which is fine, he has been a great cricketer, he has been very intense with his cricket,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by News18.
Reacting to the same, however, Kohli refuted the claims in a sensational press conference. “When I communicated with the BCCI first about quitting T20I captaincy, I told them that this is my point of view, these are the reasons for my decision, it was received quite well. No one took offence, no one had any hesitation. No one told me that I should not leave the T20I captaincy,” Kohli told the press.
With the episode creating so much hullaballoo, many eyes are on Kohli’s performance in the rainbow nation.
