Shaharyar Khan to step down as PCB Chairman in August

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Shaharyar Khan will step down from his post in August this year. The month of August would mark the completion of his three-year term as the supreme position holder of the Pakistani board. As per the reports in NDTV, Shaharyar Khan himself confirmed the news on Thursday. He noted that he has conveyed the same to the board of governors and marked August 18 to be his last day at the office. He addressed the media on the occasion and mentioned that he already written to the patron in chief of PCB, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif about the decision.

“I have today (Thursday) conveyed to the members of the Board of Governors that I will step down on 18th August on completion of my term and I will not be contesting for another term as chairman or in any other capacity in the Board,” quoted the PCB chairman.

The 83-year old former career diplomat has taken the decision owing to his personal and health reasons. He has previously served as the former High Commissioner to India and had a major heart surgery in the year 2016 at London. There were speculations of him retiring from the position back then but he came back and continued to serve Pakistan cricket. He further informed the media that post his retirement from the coveted post, there will be the conventional constitutional method incorporated to elect his successor as the PCB Chairman.

“I have written to the Prime Minister that I am ready to step down, resign at any time if he wants before completion of my term,” he quoted.

He has been a great leader of the board at the helm and has taken some big decisions including staging the PSL finals in Lahore this year. Earlier, he had served at the same position from 2003 to 2006. It was under his chairmanship when team India had toured Pakistan in 2004 and the two neighbouring countries shared cordial cricketing ties. Apparently, there are chances that Najam Sethi might be re-elected as the next PCB Chairman. Interestingly, it was Sethi, who held the office as PCB Chairman in 2014 before Shaharyar Khan replaced him.
