The ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy has been a dream start for Jharkhand spinner Shahbaz Nadeem. After their first match against Haryana was washed out, the left-arm spinner left no room for Rajasthan’s batsmen. He bowled exceptionally well and returned with the absolutely unreal figures of 8/10 in his ten overs and amazingly five of them were bowled. After such a brilliant spell, he is now hoping to break through the Indian team and Nadeem deserves to do so.
The 29-year-old has been toiling hard in the domestic cricket consistently for so many years now. He is one of the most consistent performers and has broken a 20-year-old List A records to register the best figures in the limited-overs format. He, however, has been unlucky as India has always possessed some of the best spinners in the team which hasn’t allowed the selectors to pick him.
With Windies Test and ODI series around the corner, this might be the best opportunity for MSK Prasad and Co to give him the chance and test Nadeem at the highest level.
The ultimate dream is to play for India
Shahbaz Nadeem, while speaking to the Indian Express Daily, felt that the magical spell must have brought him close to playing for the national team. He admitted that the fact of him not being picked frustrates him a lot sometimes but then his father’s words calm him always.
“I consider this spell as another step towards achieving my ultimate dream of playing for India. Alone in my room, I am always fighting for a place. What else do I need to do to play for India?” But then, that’s when my father’s words come to mind – ‘if it’s written in your destiny, then you will play’ for India. This despite him being more desperate than me for the dream to come true,” he said.
The two-match Test series against Windies is all set to commence on October 4 in Rajkot and it will be interesting to see if Nadeem will receive his maiden international cap finally.
