Shahid Afridi names the best bowler he ever faced in his career
He answered a few other interesting questions as well.
Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi is a man of many shades. On the ground, he still is a force even though he plays only T20 cricket now. Off it, he is known for putting across his straight-forward viewpoints on matters related to cricket and otherwise. The 39-year-old recently was involved in a rapid interview and came up with some interesting answers.
Afridi, who is known as “Boom Boom” for his six-hitting capacity (he has hit 476 sixes in international cricket), named former Australian pacer Glenn McGrath as the best bowler he has faced in his career. However, in an interesting observation, he said with a smile that he would like to see the Hollywood veteran Tom Cruise to portray him if ever a film is made on his life and career.
Age is just a number
The former Pakistan international’s best reply came perhaps when the interviewer asked him what he told people who joked about his age. “Age is just a number,” he said in a composed manner while speaking to ESPNCricinfo. Shahid Afridi made his international debut in 1996 when he was just 16 and went on to play till 2016 though he played a game captaining ICC World XI against the Windies last year.
He scored over 10,000 runs and took over 540 wickets in international cricket during a long career. He also led his country in the 2011 World Cup held in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and lost to eventual champions India in the semi-final in Mohali. Afridi did not take any particular name when he was asked to pick the best batsman between Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Joe Root and Kane Williamson and felt all are top players.
The former all-rounder, who has spoken time and again on issues other than cricket like terrorism, recently condemned the dastardly shooting act in a couple of mosques in New Zealand that killed 50 people. He said terrorism knows no religion and thanked that the touring Bangladesh cricket team at the time of the mayhem in New Zealand was safe.
