Shakib Al Hasan claries himself after his alleged brawl with a supporter

Bangladesh recently played a two-match Test series, a three-match ODI and a three-match T20I series against the Windies. While they miserably slumped in the red-ball fixtures, the Tigers brushed aside the home team in the coloured-clothing matches. All-round cricketer Shakib Al Hasan had a reasonable outing. The Magura-born player was the captain of the Test and ODI teams.

He is also recovering from a finger injury, which he sustained back in January, and will undergo a surgery in a bid to make a comeback at the earliest. He also hinted that he might miss out on Bangladesh’s campaign in the Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) which gets underway next month. He mentioned that he doesn’t wish to take the field without attaining full fitness.

Parking aside his cricketing prowess, he has also been a part of a number of controversies in his career. Recently another such incident sparked when a video went viral on the social media where the 31-year-old was seen in a heated altercation with a supporter. The video was greeted with mixed reactions. While some supported Shakib Al Hasan, a few of them also lashed out at the veteran.

In the meantime, Shakib has opened up on the incident and shared a post on his official Facebook page. In his message, he remarked that the video didn’t reveal the entire sequence of events and it was out of context. He also urged the fans to understand the situation of the players after taking part in back-to-back matches. Bangladesh last two T20Is at Lauderhill was played on August 4 and 5 respectively.

Shakib’s clarification

He wrote the same in Bengali, his mother tongue and also shared a translation of the same in English. “Dear fans and followers, it has come to my notice that a video clip has been uploaded of me and a so called “fan” arguing in our hotel lobby after grueling match against the West Indies. The clip does not convey the entire sequence of events and shown out of context.

I, like my teammates, was exhausted after back-to-back matches and just wanted to go back to our rooms. We were carrying our own equipment and bags and my hands were full so I was not in a position to give out autograph at the time. I, along with my teammates, usually try to spend our times with our fans and also share moments by taking selfies and giving out autographs. But fans also need to understand that we are human beings and give our all in the field fighting for our national colors. Are we not allowed to be busy or tired? We understand and appreciate your support for the team and us and we will always give it our all to ensure that we honor it on and off the field. However times like this, sometimes makes the entire struggle and hard work unbearable and difficult to cope with. 

My humble request to you is that you don’t take it personally when one of us can’t meet your requests, as the situation we are in might be different from what you are seeing. Please do not rush to make judgment or form opinions about us without trying to understand whether we are in a good mood or bad mood. I love my fans and I play for them whether its for the national team or any other league team, but at the same time I expect respect, love and most importantly understanding form you all. I know some people (who follow me or not) will try to make an issue out of nothing, but this petty mentality needs to change if you expect us to do better. The matches are difficult as it is and we don’t need this added pressure. From one human being to another, thanks for understanding.
