Shardul Thakur has been inconsistent, is a work in progress: Stephen Fleming

The Chennai Super Kings have done tremendously well in the tournament so far. Every game, there have been decent contributions as one or the other player has stepped up for them. However, death bowling has been a concern for them and the game against Mumbai Indians was a sublime proof of the same.

Coach Stephen Fleming has stressed upon displaying some stability in death bowling. The likes of Shane Watson, Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar have been quite inconsistent while doing the role for Chennai. Dwayne Bravo has been the only decent notch in that department.

In the game against Mumbai Indians, Shardul Thakur conceded 16 runs in the penultimate over. This made the equation quite easier for Rohit Sharma and Co who needed just six from the Bravo over. Fleming conceded that Thakur was still working his way to establishing himself as a death bowler.

“I do see Thakur as a bowler for the slog overs and he’s done it for India. Yes, he has been inconsistent at the death. While he made some good gains there is still some inconsistency. We have worked hard on getting his planning right more than anything. He is a work in progress.”

Throwing players in and out doesn’t solve the problem

Fleming stated that this was the time to impose faith on the players and back them. When asked if Thakur’s indifferent form had propelled them to make changes, he felt that dropping players wasn’t the solution. However, he didn’t rule out the possibility of the same.

“We need to find a couple of bowlers, not just Thakur who can do that job. At the same time, we show faith in players. Chucking players in and out doesn’t solve the problem. But we will assess again and make sure the numbers stack up. Otherwise, we will look to make a change.”
