Shashank Redemption: 10 Facts about the newly Appointed BCCI President: Just as the title of the post suggests resurgence, the ‘former’ BCCI President, Shashank Vyankatesh Manohar is no longer a former President. Just after a few days from his birthday (which was on 29th September), Shashank Manohar has been presented with the most appreciable ‘birthday gift’ as he has been elected as the BCCI President unopposed on today, i.e. 4th of October, 2015. After the demise of the BCCI President, Jagmohan Dalmiya on 20th September, 2015, the post was left void and a President had to be elected. And thus, Shashank Manohar has been elected for the purpose.

1. Birth:

Shashank Manohar was born on 29th September, 1957 in Nagpur.

2. Family Background:

Shashank Manohar comes from a family of lawyers. In fact, Shashank is the eldest son of Sandhya and VR Manohar. VR Manohar once served as the Advocate general of Maharastra and had also been the president of Vidarbha Cricket Association. Shashank’s younger brother, Sunil Manohar has also served as the Advocate General of Maharastra in 2015.

3. Professional Background:

Coming from a family of lawyers, Shashank too became a lawyer and practised law at the early stages of his career till when he made his way into the BCCI.

4. BCCI President:

In 2008, Shashank Manohar became the 29th President in 2008, succeeding Sharad Pawar. Prior to being the president of the BCCI, Manohar was the President of the Vidarbha Cricket Association.

5. India’s Achievements during his tenure as BCCI President:

In the span of 2008-2011, India made impressive progress as a team. In fact, India became the Number 1 test team in 2008. Also, India won the ICC World Cup in 2011, defeating Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in the all important final.

6. Image as an Administrator:

Shashank Manohar has the dignified image of ‘Mr. Clean’ and he is said to be the apt successor of late Jagmohan Dalmiya. Never in his tenure as the President of the BCCI, there were any allegations against him. In fact, in June 2010, he suspended Lalit Modi for his misconducts with respect to the Indian Premier League. For this, he was lauded as he took a necessary step to instil the dignified image of the game in the country.

7. 2013 IPL Controversies:

In 2013, Manohar raised his voice and suggested the board to investigate on every match of the IPL. Also, he straightaway rejected the post of ‘care taker’ of the then Board Chief, N Srinivasan. He clearly mentioned that he could not act as the ‘ad-hoc’ in the board.

8. BCCI Elections in 2013:

During the BCCI elections, Manohar lashed out at N Srinivasan for being a corrupt administrator. He also went onto say that Srinivasan has stained the image of cricket in the country.

9. Post election Press conference:

Manohar said, “In last few days the confidence of cricket loving fans has shaken due to certain unpleasant things that have happened, but leaving them behind, it’s now duty of all board members to build the reputation of this board. We want to restore the faith of fans that cricket is clean.”

10. Promises made:

Six promises have been made by Shashank Manohar which will be implemented during his tenure. They are:
I. Regulating Conflict of Interest Issues.
II. Preventing on-field corruption.
III. Getting member associations’ accounts in order.
IV. Making the BCCI’s financial records public.
V. Developing the bench strength of the Indian team.
VI. Reinvigorate Women’s cricket.
