It has been a common sight in international cricket that the off-springs of great cricketers tend to take up the same sport as their father or mother. Sometimes they are successful and sometimes their career ends in a disaster. And, not everyone is like Tagenarine Chanderpaul, who has seemingly started following his father, Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s footsteps towards success.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the former West Indies batting legend who was known among the fans for his batting stance more than his batting skills, must be immensely proud to see his son taking such big strides. And, the numbers are proof of how big a legend Shivnarine was. Chanderpaul played 268 One Day Internationals, and 164 Test matches along with a handful of T20 Internationals for West Indies. In a career that started in 1994 and ended in 2011, he scored more than 20,000 runs, which is a lot by any standards.

His son, Tagenarine, also seems to have taken the same path as him. In a recent four-day match in the West Indies Championship, Jr. Chanderpaul batted an entire day. This feat of Tagenarine made everyone draw comparisons between him and his dad, who also was known for his grit and determination while on the pitch. During his stay on the crease, Tegnarine faced 274 deliveries and scored 66 runs, helping his team, Guyana reach a total of 209/8 by the end of the day’s play.

Both Shivnarine and Tagenarine Chanderpaul have even played together

The story Tegbahadur is really interesting. In fact, in one match in 2013, both Shivnarine and Tagenarine batted together in a First-Class match, making them one of the few pairs to do so. Four years later in 2017, both of them displaying their batting brilliance, scored the fifties in the same match, becoming the first father-son duo to do so.

Given the success that Tagenarine is enjoying in the domestic circuit of the West Indies, and a great mentor that he has in the form of his dad, it should not come as a surprise to anyone if he goes on to represent the West Indies in the future. And, replicate or even surpass the success that his father enjoyed playing for the same team.
