'Show them some freaking respect' - Twitter slams Mohammad Azharuddin for his comment on Indian women's team
'Rubbish batting by the Indian team. No common sense,' Azhar wrote in his tweet.
The Indian women’s cricket team lost to Australia in the finals of the recently concluded cricket tournament at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham on Sunday, earning their first-ever silver medal. Harmanpreet Kaur, the team’s skipper, put forth an extraordinary 65, but it was insufficient to carry her team over the finish line.
India needed to score 162 runs to win the gold medal, but they were bowled out for 152 runs, falling short of just nine runs from their first big title. India needed 11 runs in the dramatic final over of the thrilling game at Edgbaston, but it was Australia who held their nerves and went on to grab the gold medal.
While the Women in Blue got the silver medal for their efforts, former India men’s team captain Mohammad Azharuddin slammed the team for their performance and received a backlash for his comments. “Rubbish batting by the Indian team. No common sense. Gave away a winning game on a platter,” he tweeted.
His tweet went viral in no time as fans came in support of the women’s team for their efforts in the Commonwealth Games and slammed Azharuddin for sharing a distasteful comment for the Indian side. While one of the fans sarcastically asked him about his achievements against the Australians during his playing days, another pointed out the Indian men’s team’s poor run during the 90s, when Azhar was leading the side.
There were also users who asked him to be respectful towards the women’s team and appreciated the girls for their efforts as they clinched the silver medal at the prestigious event, while another told him to use better language. Replying to his tweet, there was a user who said that he had no right to criticize the girls because he had not appreciated their performance when they did well.
India’s search for a major title win
India defeated England by four runs, a close margin, in the semi-finals of the CWG 2022 and became the first team to assure a medal on the big stage. Australia defeated New Zealand as the World Champions met India for the summit clash. India had been in a dominant position while chasing 162 runs but couldn’t handle the pressure in the slog overs as the Aussies grabbed an upper hand. In the past six years, the Indian women’s team has entered the finals of three big events and finished runners-up.
Here’s how the Twitter reacted to Azharuddin’s comment-
