Shubman Gill reveals what went through his mind after dropping Dhoni's catch
Gill batted at number 4 in the batting line-up in the absence of Nitish Rana.
The U19 star of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) Shubman Gill displayed his class in the game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). His match-winning unbeaten knock of 57 runs helped his team gun down the target of 178 runs with utter ease. He batted at number 4 for the first time this season and thrived in difficult circumstances. While everyone is busy lauding the youngster, Gill has revealed that he was under pressure after dropping the catch of MS Dhoni and felt that he has to win the game with the bat now.
KKR had bowled well to tie down the batsmen of CSK who had got off to a flyer. But their skipper Dhoni was in the middle trying to propel his team towards the score of 200. In the process, he mistimed a slog off Kuldeep Yadav in the 18th over which was about to end up in the hands of Gill who was stationed in the deep. But the occasion got better of him and the ball burst out of his hands. The lifeline was given to Dhoni and he eventually made the difference in the end by scoring 43* runs.
I was feeling embarrassed
Shubman Gill revealed that he felt embarrassed after dropping a sitter which might have cost the game for his team. “Nobody gave me an angry look but I was feeling really embarrassed that how can I drop such an easy catch. I was hoping that MS Dhoni gets out in the next ball but then he hit a terrific sweep shot which was coming towards me, and I was like I have to save the boundary at any cost now,” he said in a candid interview with his skipper Dinesh Karthik after the match.
Moreover, he also revealed that he took upon him to win the match for his side with his batting. He admitted that he felt a lot of pressure after fumbling the catch. As it turned out, the future star of India unfurled some of his beautiful strokes in the second innings. He proved his worth at number 4 and might well continue at the same position even after Nitish Rana comes back into the side after getting fit.
“I dropped MS Dhoni’s catch, so I was feeling the pressure that I have to win the match for the team, and if we lose, then I will have to face the brunt of the defeat,” the 18-year-old added.
