Six arrested in UP for betting in IPL 9

The darker side of the Indian Premier League has always been a minor part of the tournament over the years. With the likes of even players and franchise owners implicated in several of the controversial incidents over the years, the authorities concerned are always on the lookout now to avoid a repetition of any such untoward incidents.

Controversy has hit the IPL 9 as six persons have been arrested by the UP Police for betting. The incident occurred in the Shambala region of the state. The names of the six accused arrested yesterday by the police during an IPL match are Ravi Kumar, Govinda, Pradeep Kumar, Arun Kumar, Vikram and Monu Raghav.

Reports also suggested that the police have confiscated a TV set, four sets of mobile phones and Rs. 2000 in cash. The police also added that a criminal report and subsequent charges were added against the names of the four accused.

This isn’t the first time illegal betting has taken place in the IPL. The Lodha committee had previously suspended Gurunath Meiyappan, the son-in-law of Chennai Super Kings owner N Srinivasan. Raj Kundra, the part-owner of the Rajasthan Royals was also implicated in the controversy, thus ensuring a ban for him and the Rajasthan Royals as well.

The Lodha committee also released a statement stating that the Rajasthan Royals and the Chennai Super Kings brought disrepute to the IPL and the BCCI, therefore ensuring their suspension from the league for a period of two years. The players from the suspended franchises are now plying their trade with the Rising Pune Supergiants and the Gujarat Lions.

Strict action is expected to be taken against those accused following the controversies that have engulfed the IPL over the past few years.
