India beat Sri Lanka by ten wickets to clinch their eighth Asia Cup title.

India clinched their eighth Asia Cup title as they beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the final of the Asia Cup 2023 on Sunday, September 17 at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. After opting to bat first, Sri Lanka were bundled out for just 50 as Mohammed Siraj ran through their batting order with his best bowling performance in ODIs. He picked up 6/21 in seven overs and destroyed the entire Sri Lankan batting order.

Apart from him, Jasprit Bumrah (1/23, 5 overs) and Hardik Pandya (3/3 in 2.2 overs) were also amongst the wickets. Following, India’s comprehensive win, Siraj and Bumrah were seen hugging each other in the dressing room. The heartfelt moment between the Indian seam duo has gone viral all over social media.

Coming back to the match, chasing a small total, India started the innings with a new opening pair of Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill. The duo came out all guns blazing and began dealing in boundaries from the first over itself. Courtesy of their aggressive approach, India chased down the target in 6.1 overs and registered their biggest win in terms of balls remaining (263 balls). Kishan remained unbeaten on 23* (18) while Gill scored 27* off 19.

Siraj was awarded Player of the Match for his sensational spell and in a heartwarming gesture, the seamer donated his prize of $5000 to the groundstaff of the stadium. Notably, the groundsmen at the R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo had worked tirelessly throughout the tournament to cover and uncover the playing field during several rain interruptions. To honour their contribution in making the tournament successful, the Indian fast bowler donated his prize money to them.

Kuldeep Yadav gets Player of the Tournament award

Apart from him, wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav was awarded Player of the Tournament for picking nine wickets from four matches as India clinched their eighth Asia Cup title and continued their dominance in the continental tournament. The Men in Blue are the most successful team in the tournament’s history followed by Sri Lanka (six titles) and Pakistan (two titles).
