In a jaw-dropping moment during a recent Big Bash League (BBL) clash between Melbourne Stars and Sydney Thunder, Haris Rauf found himself in an unexpected spot of bother.

Rauf, not anticipating the Stars losing three wickets in three balls in the final over bowled by Daniel Sams, had to step up to the crease without pads, creating a moment that left fans and commentators alike confused. He walked up without pads in order to avoid getting timed-out.

It all kicked off with Beau Webster's dismissal, caught and bowled by Daniel Sams, initiating a breathtaking late breakdown. Following Webster, Usama Mir departed, caught by Chris Green on the very next ball. The frenzy continued as Mark Steketee fell victim to a run-out by Cameron Bancroft, sealing a rare team hat-trick. Rauf found unprepared at the non-striker's end, rushed onto the field sans pads, struggling to gear up with helmet and gloves, yet forgetting the crucial leg protection.

The Pakistan speedster faced a challenging stint during the 2023 World Cup, where Pakistan failed to secure a spot in the semifinals. Subsequently, he withdrew from the Test series against Australia, drawing criticism from Wahab Riaz, the men’s team chief selector. The 30-year-old initially made his mark with the Stars in the 2019-20 BBL season, showcasing his prowess by clinching a hat-trick and securing a notable five-wicket haul.

Sydney Thunders thwart Melbourne Stars

The Stars, having chosen to bat first, concluded their innings at 172 in 20 overs. Beau Webster emerged as their top performer, notching up 59 runs off 44 deliveries with two fours and two sixes. Hilton Cartwright added impetus with a brisk 22 off 11 balls before Zaman Khan dismissed him. Openers Thomas Rogers and skipper Glenn Maxwell contributed 21 and 30 runs, respectively.

The Sydney Thunders eventually went on to win the match with five wickets to spare. Cameroon Bancroft and Alex Hales gave a positive start with both breaching the 30-run mark. Despite Beau Webster’s onslaught with the ball as he picked four wickets, the Thunders' middle order came to the rescue with timely boundaries and took them over the finishing line.
