BPL 2023: Shakib Al Hasan loses his cool, screams at umpire for not giving a wide
Shakib Al Hasan scored 67 runs from 32 balls in the contest against Sylhet Strikers.
Bangladesh veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan lost his calm as he charged aggressively towards the square leg umpire during the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) fixture on Saturday (January 7). The incident happened during the game between Fortune Barishal and Sylhet Strikers at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.
Shakib has never shied away from expressing his disapproval and a controversy erupted when the umpire didn’t signal a wide in the BPL contest. In the 16th over of the match, Rejaur Rahman Raja bowled a short pitch delivery which seemed to have bounced enough for the umpires to call it a wide.
However, the umpires did not signal the extra upon which the veteran star, who represented Fortune Barishal, went on to scream at him and suggested that it was clearly a wide, gesturing with his hand.
Despite the aggressive behaviour, the umpires did not pay much heed and decided not to overturn the decision. What followed was Shakib walking back frustratingly to face the next delivery.
Shakib Al Hasan’s majestic knock goes in vain
Soon after the incident, the batter immediately dispatched the ball onto the stands over the mid-wicket region as he targeted Rejaur. Shakib registered a half-century off 26 balls and concluded the innings with a score of 67 runs which included four maximums and seven boundaries.
Eventually, the batter was dismissed by the evergreen Mashrafe Mortaza on the first ball of the final over in Barishal’s innings. The massive knock went in vain as a combined team performance by the Sylhet batting unit helped them chase the 195-run target.
Sylhet Strikers have won both their fixtures and stand on top of the table with four points whereas Barishal began their campaign with a loss despite putting up a fight.
