Courtesy of having a couple of terrific seasons in the Indian Premier League, Tilak Varma earned his maiden call-up in the five-match T20I series against West Indies. On his debut, the 20-year-old played some brilliant cricket, hitting 39 runs off 22 deliveries while he also took a phenomenal catch to dismiss Johnson Charles in the ninth over.
Meanwhile, after the completion of the match, Varma’s teammate from the Mumbai Indians camp, Dewald Brevis sent a very special message across his way. The South African congratulated Varma on his impressive debut and has also shared that he got goosebumps when the Hyderabad-born cricketer hit two sixes in the first three deliveries that he faced.
“Hey brother, I hope you are very excited. I don’t know If I am more excited than you, but I just want to say from my side and from the Brevis family, congratulations on your debut. It’s such a great moment for you and your family. I can just imagine how happy your parents and everyone must be. It’s great to see you out there, living your dream out,” Brevis said in a video shared by Indian Cricket Team.
“Those shots on the second and third ball gave me goosebumps. You always have my support and all the best for rest of the series. I’m backing you fully and go win every game for Team India. Cheers brother!,” the youngster added.
West Indies defeat India by four runs
Despite Tilak’s excellence, team India failed to win the first T20I in Trinidad. Batting first, West Indies struggled to get going but Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell did a commendable job in the middle, as the home team posted 149 runs on board.
When it came to the chase, India’s wickets fell like a house of cards but Tilak’s knock kept the team in the game. However, post his dismissal, things once again looked shaky as the Hardik Pandya-led side lost the match by four runs.
