Mitchell Santner won the toss and opted to field first. Matt Henry provided the first breakthrough for New Zealand as he dismissed the in-form Shubman Gill in the third over. Rohit Sharma struck a couple of boundaries before being dismissed by Kyle Jamieson. Virat Kohli struck a fierce cut off Henry but he was caught magnificently by a flying Glenn Phillips.
India were in trouble, losing three wickets for 30 runs. Axar Patel was promoted up the order and he formed an important partnership of 98 off 136 balls with Shreyas Iyer. The all-rounder was dismissed after scoring a crucial 42.
Iyer, however, continued batting with caution before he was dismissed by William O'Rourke for a 98-ball 79. He struck four fours and two sixes in his innings. KL Rahul got a start but couldn't convert it into a substantial score. Hardik Pandya played a fine hand in the death overs as his run-a-ball 45 helped India bat their 50 overs and finish on 249/9. Henry was the pick of the Kiwi bowlers as he finished with figures of 5/42 in eight overs.
In reply, New Zealand lost the wicket of Rachin Ravindra in the fourth over as he holed out to deep third man off Hardik Pandya's bowling. Kane Williamson came out to the crease and hit a flurry of boundaries. Will Young, who was looking to anchor the innings, became Varun Chakravarthy's first victim in the clash.
Daryl Mitchell and Tom Latham looked to spend time in the middle on a surfacing that was helping the spinners. However, they couldn't capitalise on their starts. Big-hitters - Glenn Phillips and Michael Bracewell were dismissed in quick succession as New Zealand were in all sorts of trouble at 159/6.
Williamson was fighting alone for the Blackcaps but his innings of 81 came to an end in the 41st over as he was out stumped by Rahul off Axar's bowling. Mitchell Santner hit a few lusty blows during his 28-run knock but he was left with too much to do in the end. India won the match by 44 runs to finish at the top of Group A. Chakaravarthy scalped five wickets for 42 runs in 10 overs and won the Player of the Match award.
