ENG vs AUS 2024: Brydon Carse takes magnificent catch to dismiss Steven Smith in 3rd ODI

During the third ODI between England and Australia on Tuesday at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street, England's Brydon Carse made headlines with a sensational diving catch that dismissed Australia's Steve Smith. 

The match began with England winning the toss and electing to bowl. Australia, leading the series 2-0, was eager to seal the series with yet another win, but the hosts had other plans. The Australian innings saw early setbacks with openers Matthew Short and Mitchell Marsh departing for modest scores.

However, it was Smith who steadied the ship, scoring a patient and crucial inning. The right-hand batter started slowly but gradually found his rhythm just as he reached his half-century and was going for a potential century.

In the 35th over, facing Jofra Archer, Smith attempted to accelerate the scoring rate with a big shot. The ball smashed towards the square boundary, where Carse was positioned. The Englishmen sprinted to his left made a full attempted dive, and plucked the ball out of the air mere inches from the ground. Smith's innings ended at 60 off 82 balls, leaving the tourists at a precarious 172/5.

England keep their series hopes alive

Despite Smith's departure, Australia managed to post a total of 304/7, thanks to Alex Carey's unbeaten 77 and valuable contributions from Cameron Green (42) and Aaron Hardie (44). For England, Jofra Archer was the standout bowler, claiming two wickets.

England's chase was disappointing as losing early wickets had them struggling at 11/2, but a magnificent partnership between Will Jacks (84) and Harry Brook (110*) turned the game. Their aggressive batting put Australia on the back foot, and when rain intervened, England were comfortably ahead on the DLS method, securing a crucial win. This victory has kept the host's hope alive with the series hanging at 2-1. Both teams will next feature in the fourth ODI at Lord's on September 27.
