Former India international Wasim Jaffer names the toughest bowlers he ever faced

Known for his class and elegance during his playing days, former India international Wasim Jaffer played 31 Test matches for the nation and scored 1944 runs at an average of 34.10. His record in the Indian subcontinent is tremendous and so is in the foreign conditions of England, South Africa and the West Indies. 

He played against almost all the top-notch bowlers of his era and always made his presence felt with the bat. However, there were certain bowlers who made him nervous at times. Replying to a fan on Twitter, the 44-year-old revealed the toughest bowlers he faced during his time.

“Brett Lee and Dale Steyn. And also Hoggard in English conditions,” Jaffer tweeted on Friday, October 28 during a Q&A session with CricTracker. In the six innings he faced Brett Lee in his Test career, the speedster dismissed him five times while Dale Steyn picked his wicket only once in eight innings. He always struggled a lot to get going against Lee while Steyn troubled him with sheer pace and ability to swing the ball in both ways.

Meanwhile, Matthew Hoggard is considered to be one of the greatest English Test bowlers and was phenomenal in English conditions. He picked up 248 wickets in 67 Tests at an average of 30.50.

With two back-to-back wins under their belt, team India has shown a lot of quality and determination to do well in the ongoing T20 World Cup. The team defeated Pakistan in their first match and hammered the Netherlands in their second game of the Super 12 and now are one of the favourites to qualify for the semi-finals of the competition.

Thus, Jaffer feels the team shouldn’t chop and change much in their next match against South Africa. When a fan questioned him whether India should drop Axar and play an extra batter in the form of Deepak Hooda, Jaffer denied it and replied in his style. “I'd continue playing Axar at 7. No need to fix something which isn't broken,” said the former cricketer.
