For the unversed, Bumrah has been confined to the sidelines since September 2022 owing to a recurring back injury. In March 2023, the express pacer successfully underwent back surgery in New Zealand and joined NCA for rehabilitation.

While he is ruled out for the entirety of the IPL, there is an outside chance that the pacer could make it to the ODI World Cup, which will be played in October in India. Meanwhile, the five-time IPL winners announced Sandeep Warrier as a replacement for Bumrah and is yet to feature for the side.

Mumbai Indians handed second straight defeat

Speaking about the match, Hardik Pandya and Co. posted a humongous 207-run total in their 20 overs. Shubman Gill top-scored for the side with 56 runs, David Miller and Abhinav Manohar got 46 and 42 runs, respectively, whereas Rahul Tewatia slammed three sixes to score a quickfire 20* off five balls.

Meanwhile, a disciplined bowling performance by the defending champions helped them get major breakthroughs in the contest. Spinners Noor Ahmad and Rashid Khan got five wickets between them, whereas seasoned pacer Mohit Sharma got two to his name.

Down the middle-order, Nehal Wadhera tried to fire MI back into the chase with his blazing knock of 40 off 21 balls. However, with the wickets falling at regular intervals and the required rate shooting up, Mumbai eventually succumbed under pressure. In doing so, Mumbai were handed their second straight defeat, whereas Gujarat won their fifth game of the season and have ten points in the IPL Points Table.
