Virat Kohli finally ended his century drought in Test cricket and reached the three figure mark on Day 4 of the ongoing fourth and final Test against Australia. After going through a rough patch in his international career, Kohli got his maiden T20I century during the Asia Cup 2022 against Afghanistan and notched up an ODI ton in the same year against Bangladesh.
Though he found his rhythm in the white-ball format, his struggle in the Test format continued. But with a century at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Kohli finally broke the curse. By notching up the ton, Kohli scored his 28th Test ton, and his 75th overall in international cricket.
Upon reaching the milestone, his 28th Test century, Kohli kissed his wedding ring and celebrated the feat in his signature style. Kohli wears his wedding ring in a chain while playing the game, and kisses the ring everytime he gets a century.
After hitting his first-ever T20I ton, Kohli notched up three ODI tons between December 2022 to January 2023 during the series against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to take his overall century tally to 74. And finally, after a gap of 1204 days, Kohli finally got his 28th Test ton.
The 34-year-old put up fine partnerships with Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, and KS Bharat during his journey to the three-figure mark. On Day 3 of the game, Gill notched up his second Test ton and handed India the much-needed momentum in the game. Before the end of the third day’s play, Kohli reached the half-century mark.
After Gill’s dismissal, Kohli took the onus of scoring runs, showcased composure, and notched up a century off 241 deliveries. Thanks to his innings, India managed to go past the 400-run mark on the scoreboard. Just before Kohli’s century, KS Bharat walked back to the pavilion and Axar Patel joined him on the crease. Patel started off in an aggressive manner and hit the big shots as soon as he entered the game. Soon, the duo compiled a 50-run partnership off 71 deliveries.
