India took on Bangladesh in the first Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on September 19. Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bowl on a deck layered with spikes of grass. Just 10 overs into the game, the big three of the Indian batting lineup - Rohit Sharma (6), Virat Kohli (6), and Shubman Gill (0) - were sent back to the pavilio, with Hasan Mahmud plucking out the trio to put Bangladesh on top.

Yashasvi Jaiswal (56 off 118) and Rishabh Pant (39 off 52) forged a crucial 62-run stand for the fourth wicket as India orchestrated a brief fightback. However, Pant fell to Mahmud after lunch to a poor shot before KL Rahul (16 off 52), after looking solid in his defence, was outdone by Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

It was Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin who capitalised on the worn-out leather. They kept tonking the ball and saw India cross the 300 mark which seemed elusive at the start of the day. The duo put up a staggering 195 runs off 227 balls for the seventh wicket in an unbeaten stand to swell the Indian total to 339/6 at the end of Day 1. Jadeja remained unbeaten on 86 off 117 while Ashwin cherished a ton and will resume his innings at 102 off 112 on Day 2.

Ashwin scores his sixth Test century

Ashwin entered when India were in dire need of a partnership. Their middle-order henchman Rahul had just departed, and the local boy did not disappoint. He grasped the conditions well and reaped rewards from the leagues he played in Chennai over several months. He maintained a remarkable strike rate of around 90 and was unbeaten on 102 off 112 laced with 10 boundaries and two maximums.

With India eyeing a score over 400, Bangladesh would like to keep their most of the batters intact given India declare post Tea.
