India speedster Umran Malik once again displayed his fiery pace as he eclipsed Jasprit Bumrah's record in the first T20I against Sri Lanka in Mumbai on January 3. The Men in Blue kickstarted the New Year off to a flyer with a powerful knock coming from Deepak Hooda coupled with a four-fer from debutant Shivam Mavi that steered them to a 1-0 in the three-match series.
Put to bat first by the visitors, the Hardik Pandya-led side initially lost a few wickets and were down at 94/5 at one stage. But then in came sensational knocks from Axar Patel and Hooda which catapulted the side to 162/5 in their 20 overs. In the second innings, the Srinagar-born pacer Umran clocked up an insane 155kph on the speed gun.

The delivery came when the pacer removed skipper Dasun Shanaka from the equation just when the latter seemed aggressive with the bat. Umran also surpassed pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah's record for clocking the highest speed among Indian pacers. Bumrah has recorded 153.36 kph followed by Mohammed Shami (153.3 kph) and Navdeep Saini (152.85 kph).
India win final-ball thriller
Speaking about the match, the Lankan Lions yet again displayed their ‘never give up’ attitude and took the game deep, courtesy of Shanaka and Chamika Karunaratne. After the dismissal of the Lankan skipper for 45 runs, Karunaratne played an unbeaten innings of 23 off 16 and nearly snatched the win from the Indian side.
Needing a boundary to seal the victory off the final ball, Karunaratne failed to connect Axar Patel's delivery as India won by two runs in the end. Hooda was adjudged Player of the Match for his vital knock down the order, helping the side attain the competitive total. Shanaka and Co. will aim to overcome the failure and get to level in the series when they clash in Pune on January 5.
