Australia were handed a humiliating defeat at the hands of India in the first Test of the 2023 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Saturday, February 11. The Pat Cummins-led side was bamboozled by Indian spinners as they posted only 177 runs in the first innings and 91 in the second.

Meanwhile, for India, Ravindra Jadeja picked up a sensational fifer in the first innings while veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin did the same in the second innings.

On the other hand, the Indian team absolutely dominated with the bat, which saw skipper Rohit Sharma score a phenomenal century. In a game where all the other top-order batters struggled to get going, Rohit remained calm, took his time to settle down, and then played some brilliant cricket.

After his dismissal, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel took charge of things as both all-rounders registered half-centuries. At the fag end of India’s innings, Mohammed Shami played a scintillating cameo of 37 off 47 deliveries and courtesy of which, India posted 400 on the board in the first innings.

Australia, in the second innings, were under pressure and eventually collapsed. Ashwin dismissed their openers while Ravindra Jadeja picked up the crucial wicket of Marnus Labuschagne. Former skipper Steve Smith fought till the end and remained unbeaten on 25 as no other batter could support him in the middle.

Eventually, India won the game by an innings and 132 runs and have taken an early 1-0 lead in the four-match Test series. The second Test of the series will kick-start from February 17 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Ravindra Jadeja was awarded the Player of the Match for his impressive comeback to international cricket.
