Ahead of the 16th edition of the IPL which is scheduled to commence on March 31, Mohali-based franchise Punjab Kings have released their team anthem for the upcoming tournament. Kings took to their official Twitter handle to release a video version of the anthem.

Immersed in the traditional and vibrant vibes of the state of Punjab, the video features a host of PBKS players including Shikhar Dhawan who will lead Punjab in their upcoming campaign. Titled 'Punjabi Kings', the song recollects elements from Punjab's earliest theme song ahead of the inaugural edition created by Daler Mehndi.

The new song is sung by popular music composer Mika and features clips of Punjab's much-celebrated martial arts Gatka and the elegant Bhangra, Punjab's iconic traditional dance style.

Punjab will play their first match against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 1

Shikhar Dhawan-led Punjab Kings will initiate their campaign on April 1 against two-time IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders. The two teams will lock horns at Mohali's IS Bindra Stadium.

However, Punjab Kings met with a setback right before the start of the tournament as star England batter Jonny Bairstow is expected to miss the league on account of being refused an NOC by the England and Wales Cricket Board in order to let him focus on the all-important Ashes.

Earlier, Punjab Kings had altered their leadership ranks by ousting former captain Mayank Agarwal and handing the reins to the newly-signed Shikhar Dhawan ahead of the 2023 edition of the IPL. In the absence of Bairstow, Punjab is now left with a skinny top-order where much of the responsibilities would lie with Dhawan to give the team a solid start up the order. The team, however, boasts of the like of Jitesh Sharma, Bhanuka Rajapaksa and new recruit Sikandar Raza in the batting order.
