Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) put on their highest score at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Thursday, April 24, against Rajasthan Royals (RR). For the first time this season, the Rajat Patidar-led side breached the 200-run mark on their home ground, thanks to half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal and important cameos from Tim David and Jitesh Sharma.

Patidar lost the toss for the fourth time in as many games at the Chinnaswamy as Riyan Parag opted to field first. Interestingly, Kohli was the more aggressive batter on Thursday in his opening partnership with Phil Salt. The duo added 61 runs inside the first seven overs before Wanindu Hasaranga dismissed the England wicketkeeper-batter.

Padikkal joined Kohli in the middle on a surface where some balls were stopping. There was also some variable bounce on display. However, the two technically gifted batters played orthodox cricket shots and scored at a rapid rate. Their 95-run partnership off 51 balls set the platform up for the power hitters to follow.

Kohli was dismissed in the 16th over by Jofra Archer. The former India captain scored 70 off 42 balls, belting eight fours and two sixes. Sandeep Sharma struck twice in the following over to send Padikkal (50) and Patidar (1) packing. From 156/1 in 15 overs, RCB slumped to 163/4 in the 17th.

Rajasthan were looking to pull things back in the death overs, but Tim David (23 off 15 balls) and Jitesh Sharma (20* off 10 balls) foiled their plans. The two right-handed batters added an exhilarating stand of 42 runs off 19 balls, helping the hosts finish on 205/5 in their 20 overs.

After the first innings, Padikkal noted that the wicket was sticky throughout the innings. He reckoned that the Rajasthan Royals' batters would have a tough challenge in front of them when they come out to bat in the second innings. The southpaw also spoke about the hard work he put in behind the scenes to overcome a lean patch. He gave credit to batting coach and mentor Dinesh Karthik and head coach Andy Flower for his resurgence.

"It (the wicket) was a little sticky throughout and I feel it is going to be challenging in the second innings as well. We had clear plans before the game because the last few games here we didn't bat particularly well, it was important we ran hard and hit the gaps. I have done a lot of hardwork, last couple of years didn't go my way, but I worked really hard on my game, not just tactically but also mentally. Having DK and Andy around helped a lot. We should be able to restrict them," Padikkal said while speaking on JioHotstar.
