Michael Vaughan stunned! Why was there a 'strategic timeout' with just two runs needed in SRH vs LSG IPL 2025 clash?
Fans and Michael Vaughan were left scratching their heads as a strategic timeout was taken with only 2 runs required off 24 balls! What happened?
The thrilling IPL 2025 (Indian Premier League) season is in full swing as the tournament moves ahead to Match 7. Notably, the game was played between the hosts, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Thursday, March 27, in Hyderabad.
The match saw the visitors outclass the home side, winning comfortably by five wickets. However, an incident during the game left former England captain and expert Michael Vaughan quite amused. During the match, SRH did something bizarre, which did not go unnoticed by Vaughan. Hyderabad took a strategic timeout when Lucknow needed just two runs to win the game, with four overs (24 balls) remaining.
In most cases, teams take a break either to disrupt the opposition’s rhythm or to discuss tactical changes to ensure they are not falling behind in the game. However, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s decision prompted Vaughan to take to social media, expressing his displeasure while sarcastically commenting on the hosts' move.
"Only in the IPL can you have a strategic time out with 2 needed off 24 balls with 5 wkts remaining. #India," Vaughan wrote on his 'X' handle, along with a tongue-teaser emoji.

LSG's dominant chase overpowers SRH’s efforts
Meanwhile, speaking of the IPL 2025 clash, after winning the toss, Lucknow Super Giants decided to field first. The decision was duly justified by their bowlers as the Hyderabad opener Abhishek Sharma and wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan failed to get going. The man in form Travis Head, tried to score briskly (47 runs off 28 balls), but youngster Prince Yadav bowled him over to make life tough for the hosts.
However, skipper Pat Cummins along with Aniket Verma helped the side to get to a respectable total of 190/9 in their 20-over quota. In reply, LSG too lost their opener Aiden Markram early on, but this did not stop the visitors from playing aggressively. The duo of Mitchell Marsh (52 runs off 31 balls) and Nicholas Pooran (70 runs off 26 balls) put up a match-defining 116-run stand for the second wicket in just 8.4 overs to put the team in a commanding position. In the end, Abdul Samad's cameo (22 runs off 8 balls) sealed the game for Lucknow as they finished the chase in 16.1 overs. With this win, they have got to the winning ways after losing their IPL 2025 opener.
