From the beginning of the tournament, there were many cricket experts and fans who believed that Mohammed Shami should have been included in the Indian playing 11. However, the Indian team management decided to go ahead with Shardul Thakur instead. It wasn't until the fifth match of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 that Shami finally got his chance to play for Team India.

In the match against New Zealand, Shami proved his worth by scalping a brilliant five-wicket haul in his spell of ten overs. As a result, his performance helped India restrict the Kiwis to a score below 300. After his brilliant performance, former pacer Irfan Pathan even compared Shami to a "Ferrari," by stating that he consistently provides speed and thrill every time he takes the field.

"Mohammed Shami is like Ferrari. Whenever you take it out of garage it will give u same speed thrill and joy to ride every time," Irfan Pathan wrote on his 'X' handle.

Mohammed Shami's five-for helped India beat New Zealand to become table toppers

Following his outstanding performance, Shami broke several records. He became the first Indian player to achieve two five-wicket hauls in the history of the ODI World Cup. Additionally, he surpassed legendary spinner Anil Kumble to become India's second-highest wicket-taker in World Cup history. Shami made his World Cup debut in 2015 and currently has 36 wickets in the tournament, with his best figures being 5/54.

In the match against New Zealand, India chose to field first and had a good start, reducing the Kiwis to 19/2 during the powerplay. However, a partnership of 159 runs between Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra helped New Zealand make a comeback. Nevertheless, India fought back in the later stages and managed to bundle out the Kiwis for 273 runs in 50 overs. Shami was the standout bowler for India with figures of 5/54, while Kuldeep Yadav also performed well, taking 2/73. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj contributed with a wicket each.
