New Zealand defeated Afghanistan by 149 runs in Match 16 of ODI World Cup 2023.
New Zealand continued their winning run in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as they beat Afghanistan by 149 runs in Match 16 on Wednesday, October 18 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. After being put in to bat first, New Zealand posted 288/6 in their allotted 50 overs. In reply, Afghanistan were bundled out for 139 in 34.4 overs.
Afghanistan didn’t get off to a good start in their chase as the in-form Rahmanullah Gurbaz (11 off 21) was dismissed cheaply by Matt Henry in the sixth over of the innings. His opening partner Ibrahim Zadran (14 off 15) also fell quickly leaving his side on 27/2 after 6.1 overs.
Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (8 off 29) also failed to get his innings going and lost his wicket courtesy of a spectacular catch by Mitchell Santner. After three early wickets, Rahmat Shah (36 off 62) and Azmatullah Omarzai (27 off 32) tried to dig deep but failed to convert their starts into a big score. As a result, Afghanistan succumbed under scoreboard pressure and were bundled out for 139.

Mitchell Santner (3/39, 7.4 overs) and Lockie Ferguson (3/19, 7 overs) picked three wickets each for New Zealand while Trent Boult (2/18, 7 overs) also picked two wickets.
Earlier in the day, New Zealand lost the in-form opener Devon Conway (20 off 18) early in the innings. However, Rachin Ravindra (32 off 41) and Will Young (54 off 64) put on a 79-run stand for the second wicket to help their side cross the 100-run mark.
Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips bailed the Kiwis out of trouble
However, the Kiwis lost three wickets quickly and were left reeling at 110/4 after 21.4 overs. Captain Tom Latham (68 off 74) and Glenn Phillips (71 off 80) were involved in a 144-run stand for the fifth wicket to bail their team out of trouble. New Zealand finished their innings on 288/6 while Naveen-ul-Haq (2/48, 8 overs) and Azmatullah Omarzai (2/56, 7 overs) picked two wickets each for Afghanistan.
