New Zealand clinched a two-wicket win to seal the series 2-1.
New Zealand registered a thrilling two-wicket win against Pakistan in the third and last ODI match to seal the three-match series by 2-1 on Friday (January 13). Pakistan posted 280/9, with Fakhar Zaman scoring his eighth ODI century. But Glenn Phillips, playing at No. 7, smashed 63* off just 42 to guide New Zealand to a thrilling win.
Pakistan skipper Babar Azam won the toss and elected to bat first at National Bank Cricket Arena in Karachi. Shan Masood and Mohammad Hasnain replaced Imam-ul-Haq and Naseem Shah for the hosts while the Kiwis remained unchanged.
Meanwhile, Babar's decision to bat backfired as Lockie Ferguson dismissed Masood in the second over while Michael Bracewell got Babar stumped in the seventh over to give New Zealand a flying start. But Fakhar Zaman and in-form Mohammad Rizwan pulled off a crucial 154-run stand for the third wicket to bring Pakistan on track.
However, Ish Sodhi bowled out Rizwan (77 off 34) in the 34th over while Henry Nicholls ran out Fakhar in the 37th over to leave Pakistan struggling at 191/4. But Agha Salman scored crucial 45 off 43 to guide Pakistan to a challenging total. For New Zealand, Southee took three wickets while Ferguson scalped two.
While chasing, New Zealand started well with a 43-run partnership for the first wicket. Finn Allen scored 25 runs off 25 balls before getting run out in the ninth over. But skipper Kane Williamson (53 off 68) and Devon Conway (52 off 65) smashed fifties to keep New Zealand on track to an easy win. After an impressive knock with a bat, Salman shone with ball with wickets of Conway and Daryl Mitchell.
Pakistan bowlers made a good comeback after the fall of Williamson and Conway and seemed in the game, however, Phillips smashed an unbeaten half-century to guide New Zealand to an eight-wicket win with 11 balls to spare.
