The exhilarating action continued in the Indian Premier League 2023 as Punjab Kings hosted Lucknow Super Giants in Match 38 on Friday, April 28. Ahead of the game, there was good news for Punjab fans as captain Shikhar Dhawan was back after missing the last three matches due to a shoulder injury and he invited Lucknow Super Giants to bat first after winning the toss at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali.

The 22-year-old Gurnoor Brar was bowling the first over for the hosts on his IPL debut and almost got the prized scalp of KL Rahul on the first ball itself as Rahul pitched the ball straight to Atharva Taide at backward point. However, he ended up dropping a regulation catch to his left and gave a life to the LSG captain on the first ball itself.

Following the catch drop, Kyle Mayers and Rahul took the attack on the opposition and added 41 runs for the first wicket off just 20 balls. However, the drop didn’t prove to be too costly for Punjab as Kagiso Rabada dismissed Rahul in the fourth over of the innings making him edge the ball straight to Shahrukh Khan at short third man.

Kagiso Rabada dismisses both Rahul and Mayers

Rahul departed after scoring just 12 off nine balls as Punjab lost their first wicket. However, Kyle Mayers was unfazed by what was happening at the other end and continued his onslaught. The southpaw brought up his half-century off just 20 balls smashing seven fours and four sixes in his innings.

Mayers’ quick-fire knock was also ended by Rabada who dismissed the West Indian opener in the sixth over and gave the second strike to Punjab. Mayers departed after scoring 54 off 24 balls as he got holed out to mid-on. Courtesy of his breathtaking knock, LSG got off to an electrifying start in the powerplay and were 74/2 after six overs with Marcus Stoinis (0* off 1) and Ayush Badone (4* off 4) at the crease.
