The iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai celebrated its 50th anniversary with a blockbuster celebration on Sunday, January 18. Among the many beautiful moments of the evening, Ravi Shastri recalled his legendary “six sixes” moment that caught the attention of the spectators. Notably, Shastri, the first Indian to achieve this historic feat, recalled the moment in his signature commentary style.

In 1985, during a Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Baroda, Shastri entered the record books by hitting six consecutive sixes in an over. Baroda bowler, Tilak Raj, bore the brunt of Shastri’s hitting at the Wankhede Stadium. The former's rare feat was part of a double century that helped Mumbai secure their 30th Ranji Trophy title that season, even though the match ended in a draw. Talking about the feat, Shastri replayed the iconic scene as if happening live.

"When I hit six sixes there was TV or commentary. The first one went to his side. The second went to that side. Third on mid-wicket. He is a good bowler, so threw the fourth ball on leg-stump. Then I hit it on the Gavaskar stand. Fifth time on the Hockey ground. I will take it from here. Raj the bowler. Shastri the batsman on strike. Tough like wood. Covers Amarnath. Kiran More attentive behind the stumps. Raj bowlers. It's wide. It's flat-batted. It goes like a scud. Clears long-off. The party begins in Mumbai. In the Mumbai dressing room. 10th of January 1985," Shastri said.

Wankhede Stadium's 50th anniversary event was attended by legendary Indian legends

For the unversed, Ravi Shastri was only the second cricketer in history to achieve this milestone, following Garry Sobers. Decades later, Yuvraj Singh replicated the feat in the 2007 T20 World Cup, with Shastri himself present at the commentary panel. In 2022, Ruturaj Gaikwad joined the elite club with seven sixes in a single over during a Vijay Hazare Trophy match.

The 50th-anniversary celebration of Wankhede Stadium was attended by cricketing luminaries, including Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, Dilip Vengsarkar who paid tribute to the stadium’s rich history. Hosted by Mandira Bedi, Prasanna Sant, and Jatin Sapru the evening featured performances by Avadhoot Gupte, Ajay-Atul, Shekhar Ravjiania, and a spectacular laser show, making it a memorable occasion.
