Ahead of India's three-match Test series against New Zealand, few Indian players opened up on the essence of playing the game's longest format. In a video released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), players spoke about why playing Test cricket is the most special feeling for any cricketer.
The Indian team is set to host New Zealand with the first Test starting at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on October 16, making it their final home series of 2024. In the video, pacer Mohammed Siraj articulately expressed his love for Test cricket.
"If I have to define Test cricket in one word, then it is respect. When you bowl with a new ball in Test cricket, it's a different feeling altogether. So it's tough to describe," Siraj said.

Test cricket is nothing but life: Ravichandran Ashwin
Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin described Test cricket as nothing but life, mentioning that the format demands discipline, routine, and constant improvement. The veteran off-spinner also spoke about the excitement that precedes each Test match, from assessing pitch conditions to strategizing against opponents.
"The excitement remains when you start the Test match. There is excitement about what the pitch is going to offer. What this particular ground is going to offer, and what the opposition is going to play like? All these things are constantly running in your head. I think aspiring to play in this very format enables you to keep improving on a day-to-day basis. The fact that you are looking forward to something and getting better as a cricketer. Test cricket is nothing but life. It's an extension of what your life is. If you got a decent lifestyle where there is discipline and a good routine, there is a better chance you will be able to play Test cricket for a long time," Ashwin said.
Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja also gave their takes, pointing out the importance of temperament, patience, and consistent energy throughout the five days of a Test match.
"You need temperament and also should know how to maintain patience. I love red ball because you get to showcase your skills," Yadav said. "5 days you have to come with the same energy and intensity. Your effort goes equally on all the five days," Jadeja added
However, the morning of Day 1 of the first Test in Bengaluru has been affected by unexpected weather conditions. The toss has been delayed due to heavy rain overnight and continuous showers in the morning. The match officials are yet to decide the start of play.
