Gerald Coetzee managed to impress one of South Africa's finest fast bowlers - Dale Steyn after his all-round heroics helped the Proteas win the second T20I in Gqeberha against India on Sunday, November 10. This result helped South Africa in restoring parity in the four-match series.

India were restricted to 124/6 in their first innings as the South African bowlers put on a disciplined show on what was a difficult track to bat on at St George's Park. Coetzee was one of the best bowlers for the hosts on Sunday as he dismissed the dangerous Abhishek Sharma with the new ball and gave away just 25 runs in four overs.

South Africa found themselves in a spot of bother during their run-chase as Varun Chakaravarthy's five-for jolted them ahead of the death overs. However, Coetzee smashed an unbeaten 19 off nine balls and his 42-run partnership with Tristan Stubbs helped the hosts to win the low-scoring clash with three wickets and an over to spare.

After South Africa's nervy win, Steyn took to his 'X' handle and praised Coetzee. The former speedster opined that Coetzee's all-round heroics might grab the attention of some of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises as the mega-auction is around the corner.

"Coetzee bowling gas, hitting HUGE sixes. If anything from this series, he’s getting some IPL attention," Steyn wrote.

How did Gerald Coetzee fare in his maiden IPL season?

Coetzee was roped in by Mumbai Indians for INR 5 crore at the IPL 2024 mini-auction. In his maiden season in the cash-rich league, the right-arm pacer bagged 13 wickets from 10 matches at an average of 26.23. However, his economy rate was slightly high at 10.18.

The 24-year-old was a part of South Africa's squad in the T20 World Cup 2024 but did not get a game. He is one of the most talented young pacers in world cricket at the moment and his aggressive mindset could be an asset for any team. Fans can expect a few franchises to be interested in acquiring his services at the IPL 2025 mega-auction, which takes place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on November 24 and 25.
