'Severe penalty needs to be brought in' - Brad Hogg on Mohammad Wasim leaving crease early on final ball against Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe defeated Pakistan on the final delivery of the game to win the contest by just one run.
The debate about running the non-striker out has been going on for over a month now. Deepti Sharma sparked a discussion on September 24, 2022 by running Charlie Dean out at the non-striker’s end, and the cricketing world has just not got enough. Players and pundits have come forward to share their opinion on the matter and the discussion has been going on and on.
And since that day, there have been many instances in the game where the bowlers have either warned the batter at the non-striker's end or have gotten into a verbal war regarding the same. Deepak Chahar, in the T20I series against South Africa at home, had given a warning as Tristan Stubbs, the batter on the non-striker’s end left the crease early.
It was then Mitchell Starc who warned Jos Buttler when the two rivals - Australia and England faced each other ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022. Starc was heard telling Buttler “I am not Deepti, but I might do it.”
There have been many instances of late, where former cricketers, experts, or fans have spotted the non-striker leaving the crease early, and have come out in support of running the batter out. In the most recent instance, former Australian spinner Brad Hogg shared a picture of Mohammad Wasim Jr. leaving the crease early for the run, before Brad Evans had bowled the delivery to Shaheen Afridi in the recently concluded Pakistan vs Zimbabwe fixture.
Brad Hogg takes a dig at Pakistan batter
Pakistan required three runs to win off the final delivery, and two runs to tie the match. It was a very crucial moment in the game, but Mohammad Wasim was spotted rushing for a run. Hogg shared a picture of the same on his Twitter and wrote: “Why severe penalty needs to be brought in for leaving the crease before the ball is delivered! Last ball of the game last night!”
Even though Wasim left the crease early in order to complete the run early, Shaheen Afridi was unable to cope up. As a result, Zimbabwe players ran him out on the final delivery to bag a historic win against Pakistan, winning the game by just one run.
