T20 World Cup 2022: NAM vs UAE - Best Memes from the game
Namibia lost the crucial game by seven runs to bow out of the tournament in dramatic fashion.
UAE shocked Namibia in the Group A clash in Geelong to defeat the African outfit by seven runs. The minnows, who were playing for pride, knocked out Namibia as the Netherlands, and Sri Lanka progressed through to the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup. David Wiese's swashbuckling half-century went in vain as Namibia failed to topple UAE's 148.
Namibia's chase was off to a horrible start after losing three wickets inside the powerplay. Gerhard Erasmus and Jan Frylinck tried to get them back on track with a brief little partnership but failed to do so, as Namibia slumped to 70/7 after the end of the 13th over.
The result seemed like a foregone conclusion, with UAE needing just three wickets to complete an unlikely victory over the firm favorites for the match. But David Wiese and Ruben Trumpelmann provided a sting in the tail with a scintillating 70-run stand for the eighth wicket. Wiese, in particular, was looking in ominous touch, threatening to take the game away with his renowned power-hitting at the death.
With 14 needed off the final over and an extra fielder inside the circle due to UAE's slow over-rate, Namibia were in the ascendency to complete a miraculous recovery. However, it was UAE's opening batter Muhammad Waseem, who grabbed the headlines after a glorious last over conceding just six runs, dishing out a barrage of yorkers.
Basil Hameed and Zahoor Khan broke the back of the Namibia chase, sharing four wickets between them, while Muhammad Waseem bowled a superb final over in a tense finale to take his side home.
Chundangapoyil Rizwan and Basil Hameed rescued the UAE innings after a turbulent innings
Earlier in the match, UAE won the toss and elected to bat first in hopes of finishing the tournament on a high. Vriitya Aravind and Muhammad Waseem made sure that their side came out unscathed from the powerplay. But the former fell in the ninth over following sluggish innings of 21 off 32 deliveries.
UAE, who opted to bench Chirag Suri for the game, were buoyed by Waseem's half-century at the top of the order before the opener fell in the 15th over. That is when skipper Chundangapoyil Rizwan (43 of 29), along with Basil Hameed (25 of 14) put together a counter-attacking partnership to UAE to a respectable total of 148/3 in their designated 20 overs.
