Namibia stunned the cricketing world on Sunday with a huge win over the Asian Champions Sri Lanka in the first round of the T20 World Cup 2022. After a slow and steady start, Jan Frylinck (44 off 28) and JJ Smit (31* off 16) took charge and changed the momentum as the team scored 70 runs in the last five overs of the innings. Based on their terrific performance, Namibia reached a challenging total of 163 runs, which in the end proved a mountain to climb for the Lankan lions.

Following their historic win against Sri Lanka, the cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar congratulated the team by tweeting ‘Nam Yaad Rakhna’ (Remember the name). In reply, the captain tweeted the same three words with a flag and hands up in excitement emoji.

With this fantastic win under their belt, Namibia now are one of the favourites to qualify for the Super 12 of the competition. They are currently leading the points table with the Netherlands at number two.

It's been a historic day for us: Gerhard Erasmus

Captain Gerhard Erasmus was delighted after their massive win against Sri Lanka in the T20 World Cup. Notably, this is only Namibia's fifth win over the Test-playing nation and can very much give them the confidence to do well in the remaining games of the tournament. The captain spoke about the importance of the win and hailed the coaching staff for their continuous support while speaking at the post-match conference.

“Incredible journey, last year was a special experience for us. We've started with a great win, but lot of work to do throughout this tournament still. It's been a historic day for us. The opening day has been quite special but we want to kick on from here and qualify for the Super 12 stage,” he said.

"We understand the bigger picture as well. Credit goes to Pierre (de Bruyn) the way he has installed coaching to this team, one that's a winning culture and one that sticks together. With the limited resources, I don't think there's anyone else that could run such a tight ship,” the 27-year-old added.
