The outcome of the second delivery of the ninth over made Virat Kohli erupt with sheer exuberance in the Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, March 4. Kohli had every reason to celebrate as Varun Chakravarthy struck in his very first over, dismissing India's biggest tormentor, Travis Head.

Chakravarthy tossed up a delivery from around-the-wicket on the middle-and-off channel, which was miscued by Head to Shubman Gill at long-off. The fielder pouched the ball comfortably by making good ground to the left. Kohli, who was fielding at cover, bursted in raw emotion after the catch was completed,  mirroring the elation of every Indian supporters in the stands.

For the unversed, Head has been a constant menace to India in the past. His most-recent exploits came in the 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. More often than not, the southpaw looked at complete ease against the Indian bowling unit.

His most ruthless display against India was in the final of the 2023 World Cup in Ahmedabad, where he smacked a match-winning 137 off 123 deliveries to deny the hosts their third 50-over trophy in the ICC event. Prior to that, he swayed the result of the World Test Championship final in 2023 with a Player-of-the-Match 163-run knock.

Coming to the ongoing game, Australia won the toss and opted to bat first. They were dealt an early blow as Cooper Connolly departed for a nine-ball duck. After Head's dismissal, the celebrated duo of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne steadied the ship with a 56-run stand. The latter was the latest wicket to fall as an accurate ball on the wickets from Ravindra Jadeja trapped Labuschagne LBW for 29.

The winner of today's clash will meet either South Africa or New Zealand in the final, scheduled for Sunday, March 9.
