Karun Nair was left fuming after a misunderstanding with teammate Danish Malewar cost him his wicket in the first innings of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 final between Vidarbha and Kerala at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur.

Nair came out to bat when Vidarbha were in a spot of bother at 24/3, having lost the wickets of Parth Rekhade, Dhruv Shorey, and Darshan Nalkande. The experienced campaigner resurrected the innings in unison with 21-year-old Malewar. They added 215 runs off 414 deliveries.

The partnership was eventually broken in the dying minutes of Day 1 on Wednesday, February 26. Nair left a wayward delivery from Eden Apple, which the wicketkeeper failed to stop cleanly. Nair tried to steal a bye but his partner was not interested. Kerala skipper Sachin Baby ran backwards from the second slip, picked up the ball, turned around, and affected a direct hit to catch the former Karnataka batter well short of his crease.

Nair threw his bat away in frustration after failing to make it back to the crease. He batted 188 balls for his 86 runs and hit eight fours and a solitary six. The 33-year-old would have loved to have registered another century in what has been a memorable domestic season for him. However, he will have to wait for the second innings to notch up a three-figure score.

Vidarbha promoted Yash Thakur up the order as the nightwatchman. He did his job nicely as he remained unbeaten at Stumps on Day 1. However, the day belonged to Malewar, who scored a spectacular century. He finished on 138 not out off 259 balls, belting 14 fours and two sixes.
