Mohammed Siraj got the better of dangerous batters Sam Konstas and Travis Head in the same over on Day 2 of the fifth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday, January 4. The Hyderabad pacer bowled four excellent overs without much luck in his first spell on Saturday before dismissing Konstas and Head in the space of two deliveries.
Siraj started proceeding on Day 2 alongside his captain Jasprit Bumrah. The latter gave India their first breakthrough of the day as he got the better of Marnus Labuschagne. A few overs later, Siraj came into act and ended Sam Konstas' 38-ball stay in the middle. The right-arm pacer bowled a full delivery just outside the off-stump and lured Konstas into a drive. The latter went with hard hands and got a thick edge that carried comfortably to the left of Yashasvi Jaiswal at gully.
Much of the build-up to Day 2 revolved around the Bumrah versus Konstas battle, but Siraj managed to dismiss the 19-year-old. The Indians were cock-a-whoop as they knew the importance of the wicket as Konstas. However, Siraj was just getting started.
The 30-year-old took just two deliveries to adjust his line and length to the left-handed Head. The southpaw bowled a back-of-a-length delivery and got it to skid off the surface with a hint of extra bounce. Head didn't move his feet and got himself into a tangle as the ball nipped away and took the outside edge straight to KL Rahul at second slip.
Watch both the wickets here:
The home side slumped to 39/4 in the 12th over after the fall of Head's wicket. India's first innings score of 185 is still a long way away, and the onus will be on Steven Smith to take his team closer. The World Test Champions will not be too perturbed yet, especially with their lower-order batters contributing a lot of runs in the earlier matches in the series.
