Watch: Steve Smith's one-handed stunner ends KL Rahul's classy knock in Brisbane

KL Rahul embodied class and grace during his sensational knock of 84 in the first innings of the third Test between India and Australia at The Gabba in Brisbane. His stint with the bat ended after Steve Smith pulled off a spectacular catch in the first session on Day 4.

Rahul could have been dismissed off the first ball on Day 4 as Smith dropped him at second slip off the bowling of Pat Cummins. It was a regulation take but Smith failed to seize the opportunity. The Karnataka batter, who was batting on 33 at that point, made full use of the reprieve as he played an important knock of 84 runs off 139 balls, hitting eight gorgeous boundaries along the way.

Rahul looked well on track to register his ninth Test century but his innings was cut short by Nathan Lyon. However, the star off-spinner will have to give a lot of credit to Smith for the dismissal as the former Australian captain redeemed himself with a stunning one-handed catch at first slip.

Lyon bowled a shortish delivery outside the off-stump and Rahul tried to force the ball through the off-side. However, the experienced batter only managed a thick outside edge that flew to the right of the first slip. Smith stuck out his right hand and caught the ball cleanly. The ball had almost gone past the legendary cricketer but his sharp reflexes and remarkable hand-eye coordination made the catch look way easier than it was.

India reach 167/6 at Lunch on Day 4

The tourists lost their captain Rohit Sharma early on Day 4 as he became Pat Cummins' second victim in the Test match. Ravindra Jadeja joined Rahul in the middle and the two seasoned pros forged a 67-run partnership off 115 balls to take India past the 100-run mark.

After Rahul's dismissal, the in-form Nitish Kumar Reddy came out to the middle and formed an unbeaten 26-run partnership with Jadeja. At Lunch on Day 4, India moved to 167/6, needing another 78 runs to avoid the follow-on.
