West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee announces cash prizes for Bengal cricketers in squad after U-19 Women’s World Cup glory

The U19 Indian team led by Shafali Verma clinched the maiden U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup with an emphatic seven-wicket win to England at JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom, South Africa on Sunday, January 29. Following the historic win, the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee announced cash rewards for those players representing the state in the marquee event.

Furthermore, on Monday, at a cabinet meeting at the KMDA Unnayan Bhavan, the CM was elated with the glory attained by the young guns and expressed her joy, wishing a bright future for all the members of the squad. Adding to this, Richa Ghosh, Titash Sadhu, and Hrishita Basu along with bowling coach, Rajeev Dutta, all of whom belong to the state of West Bengal will be rewarded for their phenomenal outing and being part of the World Cup-winning squad.  

She also took to her Twitter handle to share her delight in the triumph against the three Lions calling the nation’s ‘daughters to scale greater heights’.

“Heartiest congratulations to India’s Under 19 Women’s Cricket Team. What a stellar victory in the inaugural Under 19 Women’s T20 World Cup! This is only the beginning, I am certain the daughters of India will scale greater heights in the days ahead,” tweeted Mamata Banerjee.

Jay Shah announces reward of INR 5 crore

The big news of India trouncing England in Potchefstroom, South Africa has taken the nation by storm. Interestingly, Shafali Verma became the first India women's skipper to cement her place in an elite club alongside cricketing greats like Virat Kohli and Mohammad Kaif to have won an U19 World Cup title.

The young side emerged victorious by seven wickets to clear the final hurdle in the global ICC event, which concluded the long wait for a World Cup win in women's cricket. Following the triumph over the English side, BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced a whopping cash reward of INR 5 crore for the entire squad including the support staff for the title-winning performance.
