WPL 2024: Fans celebrate RCB's first-ever title in streets of Bengaluru, videos go viral

The streets of Bengaluru erupted into jubilation as fans celebrated Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) first-ever title triumph in the 2024 Women's Premier League (WPL) against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on March 17. With a dominant bowling display, RCB secured the victory by eight wickets with three balls remaining. 

The title triumph marked a remarkable turnaround for Smriti Mandhana and Co., who had a forgettable season in the inaugural edition of the tournament, having finished fourth in the points table with just two wins. However, they embarked on a remarkable journey this year, starting strong and overcoming many challenges to reach the knockout stage. All the players rose to the occasion when it mattered most and helped the side clinch the prestigious title.

In the wake of their phenomenal win, fans flooded the streets of Bengaluru, celebrating the glory that they have been longing for years. Countless videos circulated on social media, which saw the fans rejoicing over the team's grand success. Moreover, this victory held particular significance for Bengaluru, which has eagerly awaited success since the inception of the Indian Premier League, where the men's team has yet to secure a title despite reaching the final on three occasions.

RCB beat DC by eight wickets to clinch WPL 2024 title

Delhi Capitals skipper Meg Lanning won the toss and opted to bat first. However, their decision backfired as they suffered a collapse right from the start of the first innings. Sophie Molineux spearheaded RCB's bowling attack, dismissing Jemimah Rodrigues and Alice Capsey for ducks in consecutive deliveries of the eighth over after removing Shafali Verma (44) in the first delivery of the same over. Subsequently, Shreyanka Patil and Asha Shobhana also made significant contributions, picking four and two wickets, respectively, as RCB bundled out DC by a below-par 113 runs in 18.3 overs.

During the chase, Smriti Mandhana (31) and Sophie Devine (32) provided a reliable start for RCB, adding 49 runs for the opening wicket. Later, Ellyse Perry (35*) and Richa Gosh (17*) took charge, finishing the job in style as Bangalore successfully chased down the target with three balls remaining.
