In the summit clash of the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2024, Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated Delhi Capitals by eight wickets to lift their maiden title. The Meg Lanning-led side was phenomenal throughout the tournament, as they finished as the league leaders, but on the night of the finals, they failed to put up a show with the bat, which resulted in their defeat. Batting first, DC started well as Shafali Varma and Lanning stitched a partnership of 64 runs, but after that, wickets fell like a pack of cards.
Seven of the batters failed to score in double digits as the hosts posted 113 runs on the board. RCB’s Sophie Molineux and Shreyanka Patil were ruthless with the ball as they picked three and four wickets each respectively. Meanwhile, when it came to the chase, Delhi were in the hunt till the last over, but it was Ellyse Perry and skipper Smriti Mandhana who were instrumental in their monumental victory.
After the loss, DC’s Director of Cricket, Sourav Ganguly congratulated RCB on their win and also hailed the Capitals for making it to back-to-back finals. Notably, DC qualified for the finals in 2023 as well but lost to Mumbai Indians in the summit clash. Meanwhile, despite the loss, Ganguly believes that DC have been the best team in the tournament.
