‘You hold the trophy' - Shoaib Malik gets emotional, recalls Younis Khan's heart-warming gesture after Pakistan's T20 World Cup 2009 triumph
Shoaib Malik got emotional when he remembered the then captain Younis Khan's heart-warming gesture after Pakistan's T20 World Cup 2009 triumph at Lord's.
Shoaib Malik had led the Pakistan team during the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007. While the Men in Green did reach the finals, they went on to suffer an agonising defeat at the hands of arch-rivals India in Johannesburg.
Two years later, Pakistan went all the way by beating Sri Lanka in the final and Malik got his well-deserved World Cup winner’s medal. However, the veteran all-rounder was recently left in tears when he happened to recall that special moment at Lord’s 13 years ago.
That was very special: Shoaib Malik
“When we won the World Cup in 2009, Younis Khan called me and said ‘you hold the trophy’. And that was very special,” said Malik as he sobbed recalling that highest point in his professional career while speaking on A Sports' special programme 'The Pavilion'.
While Malik did try to put up a brave face and control his emotions, he could not as he was then seen wiping his tears.

Younis Khan had led Pakistan in the 2009 edition of the T20 World Cup which was played in England. The Men in Green lifted the title at the iconic venue of Lord’s. It was at the very same ground where Pakistan had lost the 50-overs World Cup final to Steve Waugh’s Australia a decade earlier.
Now, Pakistan have booked yet another T20 World Cup final appearance and they would be facing a formidable England side at the MCG on Sunday, November 13. The winner of this contest will become the team to win the joint-most number of T20 world titles along with the West Indies (2012 and 2016).
At the same time, it also needs to be noted that Pakistan are yet to be defeated in the last two ICC tournament finals that they have featured in. Apart from the 2009 victory, they had emerged victorious in the 2017 Champions Trophy final against India.
England, on the other hand, are the reigning 50-overs World Champions and would now be looking to rewrite history by becoming the first-ever team to hold ODI and T20I world titles at the same time.
