Sohail Tanvir’s record spell deflates Barbados Tridents in CPL

Sohail Tanvir registered the most economical five-wicket haul in T20 cricket when he ripped through the batting line-up of Guyana Tridents in a memorable spell of 5/3. As many as 22 dot balls were delivered by the Pakistani left-arm bowler which led to a big 99-run win for his side Guyana Amazon Warriors.

Tanvir gets rid of the openers cheaply

Tanvir’s opening burst had set up the game for the Warriors as he picked 4/2 off 3 overs with the new ball. The breeze around the ground and a little bit of moisture in the air helped Tanvir to get considerable movement in the air and off the surface as well. He beat the bat of Kane Williamson thrice in the first over before, maybe out of frustration, the Kiwi skipper slashed at one which was taken neatly by the man stationed at third man. Two balls later, it was Dwayne Smith’s turn to follow suit. The recently retired West Indian international, charged down the wicket to whip one on the leg side but the outrageous outward movement in the air coupled with some lateral movement off the surface was too much to deal with and Smith just got a feather touch on the ball which was taken by Ronchi.

Morgan, Pollard bag a golden duck

Tanvir then sent back two of the Tridents’ best batsmen: Eoin Morgan and Kieron Powell off successive deliveries to end any hopes of the host’s comeback. Morgan’s season debut for Barbados lasted just a solitary delivery when he was trapped in front to a ball which skidded off the surface and kept a little low. Skipper Pollard felt for an away going delivery which kissed his bat and was pouched by Ronchi for his second catch of the night. At 13 for 5, there was no way the home side could have chased down 159.

Skipper Rayad Emrit called back Tanvir to deliver the 13th over which was also Tanvir’s last. As luck would have it, Tanvir got his second five-wicket haul in T20s when he bowled his home teammate Wahab Riaz off his spell’s last ball. Wahab was looking to cut a delivery which was too close to the stumps and eventually chopped the ball back to disturb the furniture. 32-year old Tanvir’s 5/3 helped him win the Man of the Match award as Barbados were skittled for a mere 59 runs.
