Some BCCI officials not in support of the latest cricket reforms introduced by Lodha panel
It appears that the board is divided in two sections, with one section in support of the latest reforms and the other against it.
The richest cricket board, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is going through some of its toughest times in the history. The Lodha Committee appointed by the Supreme Court is keeping an eye on the BCCI’s workings day in and day out, for almost over a year now. The committee had stressed on the introduction of some major reform recommendations in the board, of which the two major reforms included the maximum tenure of nine years for BCCI officials and the age limit of maximum 70 years.
However, some of the BCCI officials are completely against the above-mentioned recommendations of the panel and also termed these reforms as ‘Impractical clauses’. It is also a major fact, that only two of the BCCI officials have worked for more than nine years, which include former Presidents N Srinivasan and Ranbir Singh Mahendra. And, except former BCCI chief Jagmohan Dalmiya, no other member has become the president of the board after the age of 70 years.
No point of this battle
It appears that the board is divided in two sections, with one section in support of the latest reforms and the other against it. “What is the point of fighting a battle for a few individuals when the reforms are supposed to bring in new players into the BCCI,” said a BCCI official, who is in support of the Lodha reforms, as quoted by the Times of India.
Earlier the Indian finance minister and former vice-president of the board Arun Jaitley also expressed his views on the prospects of the BCCI adopting the Lodha Committee recommendations. Jaitley did not find any fault with the age cap and tenure recommendations. “The tenure of nine years is good enough,” said Jaitley.
“The cap is good enough because the limit has been placed only on office bearers, not on nominees, representatives etc,” added the former President of the Delhi & District Cricket Association.
The next Supreme Court hearing in the case is scheduled for the coming Friday.
